Drug and Marijuana Charges

The state of Minnesota takes all drug crimes seriously, imposing strict penalties on individuals who are convicted of these charges. If you are facing drug charges or marijuana charges in Minnesota, you need an experienced drug charges defense lawyer on your side in court.

About Drug and Marijuana Charges in Minnesota

Minnesota classifies drug and marijuana charges into five different categories. First degree drug charges are the most serious, while fifth degree drug charges are the least serious. First degree, second degree and third degree drug charges are classified as felonies. However, all of these crimes carry significant consequences.

The exact charge you will face depends on the type of drug involved, the amount of the drug and whether you were charged with the possession or sale of the drug. In general, charges involving marijuana tend to be less severe than those involving other drugs.

Possible penalties for drug and marijuana charges range in severity considerably. For example, if you are convicted of a fifth degree drug charge, you may face up to five years in prison and a fine of up to $10,000. If you are convicted of a first degree drug charge, however, you will face up to 30 years in prison and a fine of up to $1 million.

Why You Need a Defense Attorney

Because the penalties for drug charges are so severe, you have to do everything in your power to ensure that your rights are protected in court. The best way to build a strong defense is to hire an experienced drug charges defense attorney. A defense attorney with experience in drug charges will be able to help you understand how Minnesota law applies in your case so you can make the best decisions every step of the way.
